Dr. Carl O. Helvie is a registered nurse with two masters ( U of California, Johns Hopkins U)  and a doctorate (Johns Hopkins U) in public health and wellness and 60 years experience as a nurse practitioner, educator, author, and researcher. He began using a holistic approach with clients and in his own life when he was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1974 (40 years ago)   and was given 6 months to live by his primary physician. He evolved a holistic approach to health and wellness that he continues to use and now at age 82 he had no chronic illnesses nor prescribed medications until a year ago. The average for his age is 3 chronic illnesses and 5 prescribed medications and only 11% of the population over age 65 are on no prescribed medications. His book  Healthy Holistic Aging: A Blueprint for Success published in February, 2007 was written to help others achieve similar results. In Novewmber, 2012 he published You Can Beat Lung Cancer: Using Alternative/Integrative Interventions discussing his experience using a holistic approach with lung cancer . Additional chapter in the book by Dr Bernie Siegel, Dr James Forsythe, Dr Francisco Contreras, Dr Kim Dalzel, and Tanya Harter Pierce. He was intyerviewed on 125 radio and television shows about this book and was Best Selling Author several times on Amazon. Endorsements for the book were by the leaders in althernative health and reviews on Amazon and Barnes & Nobles were positive. For the past 7 years he has hosted the Holistic Health Show on BBS Radio where he has interviewed leaders in the holistic health field (mainly M.D.'s and PhD's) about wellness, cancer, seasonal alergies, arthritis and other timely topics. Innnn 2013 he founder the Carl O Helvie Holistic Cancer Foundation. In 2014 he was included in the book 50 Great Writers You Should be Reading,  In 2015 he was nominated for Nurse of the Year by Medical News.

His 2007 book assesses the health of the reader in 6 areas and provides interventions for the areas needing improvement. The six areas of holistic health include; physical, mental, and spiritual health, relationships, the environment and politics--all of which influence health.The book is well documented with current research that substantiates the data presented. Dr Charles Thomas Cayce, President of the Edgar Cayce Foundation, wrote the foreword for the book and said " One of the  most important  sections of the book which is often missing in practical holistic health books is the chapter titled " Positive mental and Spiritual Health Behaviors".
