Boston native Paul Stewart was the first American born NHL player to become an official in the top professional hockey league in the world. He has entertained, educated, and inspired hundreds of civic organizations with his amazing survival story.
A player for eight seasons in the World Hockey Association, the minors, and the NHL, Stewart also has more than a decade of experience as a hockey referee. Officiating games in the toughest professional sports league, Stewart has always been strong on the ice and seemingly unshakeable. But in 1998, he faced the toughest battle of his life. In February of that year, Stewart was diagnosed with colon cancer and given less than a 50-50 chance of survival.
Told he might not make it to Christmas, Stewart would not only beat his disease - just one stage shy of the worst on the scale - but would amaze doctors with the speed of his recovery. Less than nine months after his diagnosis, Stewart was back dropping the puck for the NHL and spreading the word of his remarkable comeback.
