Founder of the International Ecocity Conference series, Richard Register leads the nonprofit organization Ecocity Builders. Ecocity Conferences have been held in North America, South America, Australia, Africa, and China. He is the author of Ecocities: Building Cities in Balance with Nature (Berkeley Hills), of Ecocity Berkeley: Building Cities for a Healthy Future (North Atlantic), as well as of numerous articles.

Register typically engages audiences with a slide presentation featuring wide ranging examples - from Curitiba, Brazil to Kathmandu, Nepal, from Berkeley to Berlin - of cities implementing practical sustainable development solutions. He links our auto-dependent sprawling cities and towns to problems ranging from global warming to species extinctions, but he focuses primarily on what can be done, and what is being done, to craft creative, inspiring, community-oriented solutions.
