
Debbie Muir
Debbie Muir is one of Canada’s most recognized and celebrated coaches.
An international medalist in the sport of synchronized swimming in her own right, Debbie became the head coach of the Canadian National Synchronized Swimming team in 1976. She led her swimmers to win two world championship titles in Berlin, Germany, two gold medals at the world championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador, two Olympic silver medals at the Los Angeles games, three world championships in Madrid, Spain and in 1988, Debbie coached her team to the pinnacle of sport success, winning two Olympic gold medals and securing her position as one of the world’s greatest synchronized swimming coaches.
She has been inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, the prestigious International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, and was named one of the top ten coaches in Canadian history, the only woman to receive this remarkable distinction. For her excellence in leading her athletes to their best possible results, Debbie was named Alberta’s Coach of the Decade. She was twice honoured by the YWCA as a Woman of Distinction and in honour of women’s History Month, was recently named by the Coaching Association of Canada as one of the four greatest female coaches of all time.
Beyond connecting individuals and teams to their best, Debbie is committed to organizational excellence. For the past six years she has been an integral part of the sport system, working behind the scenes with Road to Excellence, the Canadian Olympic Committee and Sport Canada to review and evaluate numerous national sport organizations. Debbie’s strength is in finding ways to create the environment where world class results can happen.
In 2008, Debbie founded Great Traits Inc. with Olympic athlete Mark Tewksbury. Great Traits Inc. is a company that inspires possibility and excellence. It engages people to be champions in their own lives by connecting individuals, teams and organizations to the fundamentals of achievers, leaders and legacy. These fundamentals are what drive performance to reach best results.
In their experience, Mark and Debbie have seen that in order to become truly World class, regardless of the industry, there are core skills that need to be learned, developed and integrated in the daily work environment in order to be truly effective. Together, they co-wrote the book "The Great Traits of Champions: Fundamentals for Achievers, Leaders and Legacy Leavers.
The Great Traits keynotes and training programs focus on these fundamental traits that when consistently applied, allow us to reach any podium.
