Lynn Sweet
Sweet was the first reporter to write about the questionable Democratic fundraising practices, now the focus of major Congressional and Justice Department investigations. She was also one of the first journalists in the country to analyze the truthfulness of political commercials.
In June, 1995, Sweet broke the story of how the Democratic National Committee was marketing a sliding scale of perks to major donors, including meals with President Clinton and Vice President Gore and offering meetings with the first lady and senior administration officials in exchange for campaign cash.
Sweet joined the Sun-Times in 1976. She has covered numerous campaigns, the state legislature, Cook County government and the civil courts. She has also coordinated the papers’ political coverage. Sweet’s first job was at the Independent Register in Libertyville, IL.
Sweet received a master’s degree from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in 1975 and is a former member of the school’s alumni board. She earned her undergraduate degree in political science from the University of California at Berkeley in 1973 after attending the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.
Sweet is also a frequent guest on a variety of public affairs television shows, including “The McLaughlin Group,” “Equal Time” and other Fox and CNBC broadcasts. She is an analyst for the Canadian Broadcast Corporation, where she comments on national politics and government.
A Chicago native, Sweet now lives in Washington, D.C.
