Melissa Waddy-Thibodeaux (Actor/Playwright/Drama Instructor) has performed for over 40 years in various venues throughout the U.S. Her experience working with children and young adults, stems back to 1988 at the Ensemble Theatre where she worked closely with the late George Hawkins. She began the first children’s theater and began touring it in the early 1990’s to schools and libraries in and around the Houston area.
Her main goal is to encourage reading in younger children and a sense of pride in the culture and the ancestors they do not know about who were kings and queens and saints…like Harriet Tubman. She began Flying Geese Productions in 1998 to teach history via theatrics.
She has numerous awards for her portrayal of Rosa Parks, Nina Simone, Sojourner Truth, Big Mama, Stagecoach Mary and more. She recently received the prestigious OTTO Award for Political Theater in New York at the Rene Castillo Allstars Project for her work with incarcerated youth with The Children’s Prison Arts Project.
Her noted lecture and portrayal…was certified as a program for the National Park Service’s (NPS) National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Study in 2004. Her program, “The Resurrection of Harriet Tubman in Escape to Freedom” encourages reading and teaches about the history of the Underground Railroad and how it operated. A learning adventure you will not want to miss!! This program is currently presented by appointment at the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum. Her new book reveals true stories of her travels as a lecturer/storyteller/historical re-enactor on the New Underground Reading Railroad ©. DVDs and CDs are available of this and other shows.
She has traveled as far as Maine to perform for the NAACP Chapter there and touring to Bangor, Bath and Portland for the Annual Martin Luther King Celebration in January 2002. She recently was seen at the National Convention for the NAACP in Philadelphia in July 2004 as Harriet Tubman in the Information Exchange Center with the “Blacks in Wax Museum of Baltimore.”
She also tours a one-woman show on Domestic Violence throughout the year and especially during October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Watch for her tour show locations for the show entitled, “No Time To Cry.”

"The Life of Cathay Williams-Female Buffalo Soldier"
In costume, this reenactor portrays the woman who disguised herself as a man for two years during the Civil War, as a Buffalo Soldier.
"All About Addy"
The stories of a young black girl and her mother are portrayed as they travel to freedom during the 1800s.
"The Life of Barbara Jordan - Texas Senate"
This lecture discusses the strength and determination of a woman who left a legacy for others to follow.
