BOOK A CAREGIVNG PIONEER AND EXPERT WHO IS CHANGING THE WORLD

As one of the pioneers helping to reinvent caregiving for the 21st century, Sheila has proven to be a powerful advocate for all caregivers and wrote the guidebook on how to create and maintain a "caregiving family" of friends, colleagues, and neighbors to support someone they know facing a health, aging, medical issue, disability or any circumstance where assistance is needed. It offers a structured, cost-effective option for providing support for our aging population and a rewarding, profound life-changing experience for participants.

After years of being a solo caregiver for her mother, Sheila was part of a group of 12 women who organized to support a mutual friend who was struggling with terminal bone cancer. Over 3.5 years they became widely known as "Susan's Funny Family". Following Susan's death, requests poured in from others seeking advice and guidance. Meetings were held to teach others their unique systems for sharing responsibilities to avoid burnout and work as a cohesive team. During these sessions, Sheila was struck by the transformation she witnessed when these frightened friends were given a plan of action and inspired her to co-author Share The Care: How to Organize a Group to Care for Someone Who Is Seriously Ill" published in 1995 by Simon & Schuster Fireside books.

It generated media attention and endorsements from: ALS Association, National Family Caregivers Association; Rachel Naomi Remen M.D. and Founder of the Institute for the Study of Health and Illness at Commonweal; and Joan Baez, whose sister was supported by a group.

In 2002, Sheila put together a group for her co-author, Cappy Capossela, when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and died 10 months later. This experience, led Sheila to abandon her career as an advertising Consultant/Associate Creative Director and start the organization in 2003; update the book in 2004; and build a comprehensive website to serve: caregivers/friends; health professionals; faith communities and corporate caregivers.

Who Cares For The Person Who Lives Alone?

Today more and more people live alone often far from family, or they have no family. What happens when they need help? Who will care for them?

Sheila will inspire the audience with the stories of groups that came to the rescue of individuals without family, or spouse, or relatives who could take on a caregiver role.

Sheila describes how friends helped to overcome some difficult challenges starting with the group that pioneered the Share The Care model.
